Dear Ryan:

I am writing to you to let you know just how very much I love you and how wonderful I think you are.
I know that your life hasn't been easy, it's been a rough road with lots of tough obstacles. You started life with many strikes against you. I've tried to help in so many different ways to make up for the strikes, but I could never manage it.

I hope that you will overcome these obstacles and make a great life for yourself. Although I may not always agree with the path you sometimes choose, always know that no matter whether I agree with your decisions or not - that I will always love you.

A mother's love is unconditional. This is the love I have for you. My love isn't based on whether I think you're behaving correctly, or if your chosen career is what I'd want for you, but it's based on who you are.

I remember the first moment I held you after your birth. Childbirth amazes me and your birth was no exeption. I remember holding you in my arms lookingdown at your sweet angelic face and thinking "God, I'm so thankful that he's okay and so beautiful".

I had only asked for one thing when I was pregnant with each of you - that you be born with everything okay (a wish every mother makes), but you came out with so much more. Your face glowed with that child innocence and I feel instantly in love with you.

I write this to you now because I want you to know that I do love you and always will. Nothing will ever change my love for you.

Also I wanted you to know that I am totally proud of you.
I'm proud of the wonderful young man you have turned out to be.

A mother couldn't ask for anything more than what you are now.

I love you, and I want you to always know this.

What is a Son?

A son is a warm spot in your heart
and a smile on your lips.

In the beginning, he is charmingly
innocent, putting his complete trust
in you.

He comes to you for a hand to hold
and for the security only your arms
can provide.

He shares his tales of adventure and knows
how proud you are of his
discoveries and accomplishments.

All his problems can be solved by a
hug and a kiss from you, and the
bond, you share is so strong it is
almost tangible.....

Time passes, and your innocent little boy
starts to test his limits.
He lets go of your
hand to race into the midst of life
without thinking ahead or looking both ways.

His problems have grown along with him,
and he has learned that you can't always
make his life better or kiss his troubles away.

He spends much of his time away from you,
and though you long for the closeness you
once shared,
he chooses independence and privacy.

Discoveries and accomplishments aren't as
easy to come by now, and sometimes
he wonders about his worth.

But you know the worth of that young man.
He is your past and your future.
He is hopes and dreams that have made it
through each
and every disappointment and failure.

In your heart, your son is precious and
treasured.
Together, you struggle through
the years trying to find the right amount
of independence for each new stage of his life,
until finally, you had to learn to let him go.

Now you put your trust in him,
leaving that son whom you hold so dear
totally in his own care.
You hope he always remembers that you
have a hand for him to hold and arms to
provide comfort or support.

Most of all, you hope that he believes in
himself as much as you believe in him,
and that he knows how much you love him.
